Hello, this is Jerry Munson with the Body Mechanic Veterans’ Wellness Network, and I’d like to introduce you to one of our practitioners, Mark Holmberg
Q: Mark, describe a little bit about what you do and how you can help our veterans.
A: Well, to address that I would like to talk about what trauma and PTSD are, and what they are is a reset of the central nervous system. The central nervous system has two settings to it: It has the so-called "fight or flight" response, and it has the "rest and digest" response, and what I would like to impress on our viewers is that both of these settings have their purpose. They both have their place, but the problem is, with PTSD, people get stuck in the "fight or flight" response. This is what leads to the whole insomnia thing, it leads to digestive problems, it leads to hyper vigilance, and in a lot of really bad cases, it leads to suicidal tendencies. What I do to help these people is to help reset the nervous system into "rest and digest." This is done by helping people feel safe, and it’s done in such a way that they can relax and feel better about themselves.
Q: Mark, tell us about some of the services you offer our veterans and their families.
A: Well in terms of bodywork, I offer fairly traditional Massage Therapy. I use several modalities, Swedish Massage and Integrative Massage being the most obvious, and I also use a very gentle modality called Cranial-Sacral Therapy. This requires me to use about 5 grams of pressure, which is about the weight of a nickel. The beauty of all of these modalities coming together is, they not only help a client directly, but they help the client reintegrate back into their family and back into society, which is often a challenge when their central nervous system has been reset.
Q: So what would a typical session look like if I was a veteran, if I had PTSD, how would a session look like?
A: A session would look like taking a few moments to go over a little bit of paperwork, so we’re all informed, we’re all on the same page literally, so that I know what it is exactly that is vexing you. From there, typically I step out of the room and let the client disrobe to their comfort level. Sometimes, that means they don’t take anything off. It’s critical that I respect that. Any emotions that come up during the session are certainly welcome, and at the end of the session I’ll step out and let you get dressed, and maybe we can have a few minutes to decompress and talk about the session. I also offer meditations that you can take home with you.
Q: So, how could a veteran get in contact with you?
A: I am reachable by phone at 303.819.0097; I’ll drop a copy of my website here, it’s vitaltouchmassagedenver.com, and if you would like to just email me I’m at [email protected].
